Developing A Long Term Condition Using Patient Education

Focus groups are a popular method used to capture views and opinions for qualitative research. 3.2 Search Strategy A comprehensive search was undertaken to identify a suitable research paper using a variety of online sources searching for patient experience in managing a long-term condition using patient education. Simple Google searches (including Google Scholar), academic databases (PubMed) and scientific databases (ScienceDirect) were used to identify a paper, using question-specific search terms (Table 1 – PIOT framework question formulation) (Schardt, Adams, Owens, Keitz, Fontelo, 2007) to find papers relevant to diabetes patient education programmes. These were then combined with search terms specific to qualitative research methods such as the term focus group (Flemming Briggs, 2007). This approach filters search results that contain papers most likely to answer the question to be reviewed and exclude those that are irrelevant (Evans, 2002; Flemming Briggs, 2007; Gorecki, Brown, Briggs, Nixon, 2010).
